In The Kitchen With: Big Girls Small Kitchen's Cookies
by Kristina Gill

This week we bring you a recipe that travels well, in your own bag or nicely packaged as a gift. Cara and Phoebe, the “girls” behind the blog Big Girls, Small Kitchen, sent us the perfect recipe. Their Giant Chewy Lemon Sugar Cookies are easy to make (no special ingredients necessary) and ship, and best of all, easy to eat (too many!). A good, basic sugar cookie provides a solid foundation for so many variations and we’re sure that, armed with this recipe, you can make the perfect batch for someone special in no time at all!

Home Remedies for Seasonal Appetite Disorder
by Lily Bellow

Change is in the air: after two months of a solitary Om echoing off the walls of my yoga studio, my morning classes are now packed; excitable children line up outside my apartment building every morning for the bus; and a newly christened jar of cinnamon sits proudly on the shelf of my very own kitchen. Fall is here… almost. What do you call this in-between season when you’re packing a sweater to work, but still wearing summer sandals? More importantly, what do you eat when it’s not quite lasagna season, but the idea of a salad for dinner starts to seem like a sad joke?

For some input on how to make this transition easier, I turned to my friends Phoebe and Cara who run a food blog called Big Girls Small Kitchen. Their advice for Seasonal Appetite Disorder-sufferers, like myself, is to savor the last, bright flavors of summer in the context of heartier, more filling recipes. Their summer chicken stew recipe, below, is just the thing for easy and delicious shoulder-season dining.

Afternoon Snack: Peanut M&M Blondies (OK, Not Health Food, But Here's Why Eating One Can Help Fight Cancer)

I'm going to post a splurge today, both because these Peanut M&M Blondies look so divine, and also because eating them can help fight pediatric cancer. Here's how you can enjoy them and help out ...

I recently discovered the fabulous blog, Big Girls, Small Kitchen (a must read!), where bloggers Phoebe and Cara share all kinds of yummy, healthy recipes. But what caught my eye was their mission to help support the fight against pediatric cancer with a bake sale. A part of the proceeds go to The Valerie Fund, a nonprofit that provides support for the comprehensive health care of children with cancer and blood disorders.

Blog-to-Book Deal: Big Girls, Small Kitchen

Even though we're not included on their extensive blogroll (whatever, see if we invite you to one of our birthday parties), we are pleased to report yet another blog-to-book deal: Phoebe and Cara of Big Girls, Small Kitchen have been tapped by Harper Studio to write Cara & Phoebe's Quarter-Life Kitchen, which Publisher's Marketplace describes as "the story of two best friends and their sophomore year in the "real world," told through a series of cooking adventures, homemade recipes, and shared meals."

Food & Film: Happy Holiday Hangover
by Wendy Wecksell

In this festive time of year, one holiday tradition receives the cold shoulder—The Hangover, which is also a movie out on DVD this week. Recipes for just such an occasion included, courtesy of biggirlssmallkitchen.com!

...To execute such an evening, I enlisted my close friend and cooking mentor, Phoebe Lapine, whose blog biggirlssmallkitchen teaches you the fine art of working wonders in a NYC apartment. Instead of the classic mac & cheese, we made a version with butternut squash; the classic ham & cheese sandwich was “foodified” into prosciutto & fontina paninis with arugula pesto and pickled shallots; and grilled cheese was spun into a delectable sundried tomato pesto panini with mozzarella and arugula. As I hoped, the food served to highlight the spirit of the movie, while joyously satiating my friends’ appetite...

Big Dreams For The Girls Behind “Big Girls, Small Kitchens”
by Alexa Wagman

...Enter Phoebe Lapine and Cara Eisenpress: these twenty-four and twenty-five year old girls are the Ivy League brains behind “Big Girls, Small Kitchens,” a food and recipe guide geared towards twenty-something cooks on the lookout for user-friendly, affordable ways to navigate their kitchens. However, the blog, which highlights their cooking adventures alongside anecdotal stories, is applicable to women (and men) of all ages, in kitchens big and small. Phoebe and Cara sample recipes both old and new, all while trying not to burn down their New York City rental apartments....

I took their advice and invited a few friends over. I have to say, I was rather impressed with myself. Though no competition for the participants on Top Chef, I do pride myself on knowing my way around a kitchen as well I do my way around a Theory sample sale. The corn cakes were perfectly satisfying, and easy to make given you can make the batter a day ahead. The avocado and radish crostinis were a nice crunchy change from the mundane hummus and pita typically served at my parties. The entire menu was easy to make and clean up. Now, if only I could find a way to turn one of my hobbies into a job. For now, I think I’ll console myself with a slice of chocolate chip banana bread.
